Which One Are You? :)

According to the English dictionary near my pillow, an introvert is a person who looks inward (at himself) rather than at the world around him. An extrovert is one who is more interested in other people and things than his own feelings. Does that make an introvert more of a selfish person? I suppose not. But I had understood the concept of introverts & extroverts from a different angle, revolving around their behaviour and interaction with others. As in, introverts don’t enjoy much of interaction and prefer to stick to themselves. And extroverts are very outgoing, love interacting and are, basically, social butterflies.

I have met people from both categories and enjoy the company of both. If you ask me which one I fall into, I would be unable to give a clear reply. Because I’m a lot of both. I can be into myself one day and super-sociable right the next day. I love hanging out with friends, being with people, talking (A LOT!)…and in a group of strangers, I can be quite comfortable…in fact, I could be comfortable enough to strike up conversations with random strangers and end up being good friends with them. But I can also be more of a wallflower – sticking to myself, talking to some friend I know or just being by myself…times when I love solitude and silence, when I prefer staying at home, with just awesome ME for company! I can be both, depending on my mindset at the moment. I can’t completely fit into either groups.

Surprisingly, I have met quite a lot of uncategorized individuals like me. Kiran, my best friend, is an example. So many of my close friends are perfect examples, actually. Back at school, Kiran and I used to talk about this a lot of times. And, at the end of it, almost every time, we used to say that there should be a third category for people like us who fall in the middle. I still think so! šŸ™‚ (Actually, there are so many aspects in life where you have just two or limited categories and no choice but to fit yourself into one which suits you best. I’ve always felt there should be more for deviants, like me. Food for another post, I guess.)

And GUESS WHAT??? I just thought of midovert as a new word which would mean ‘someone who is not completely an introvert nor an extrovert’; that is, someone in the middle, who has characteristics of both categories. I just googled to see if there might actually be a word like that. And (you won’t believe this!!!) I found another blogger who came up with the same word, intended for the same meaning! The Midovert – Mind Musings. I was surprised, amazed and, I admit, excited. Wow! Someone thought the same thing as me. šŸ™‚ Awesome…like, super-awesome! That’s the miracle of blogging. You find others who think and feel the same as you, however crazy your ideas might be. It might make you seem less unique but hey! You have just found someone from across the globe who’s had the same weird thoughts as you. Thought-twins, or something, you could call them! (Another new term?!)

Aahhh…I digress. So, since I’m not the only one thinking of midovert as a possible new group for individuals like me, I guess we can officially claim it as a newly coined word!

Midoverta person who exhibits characteristics of both introverts and extroverts, not completely either. Tadaaa…!! šŸ˜€

So, which one are you – an introvert, extrovert or a midovert? šŸ™‚

  1. There’s another word too…
Both introversion and extroversion fall along a continuum, with many peopleā€”known as ambivertsā€”falling somewhere in between.

    • Thanks, Aane. I found this word after publishing the post. That is, technically, the right word for such individuals.

  2. Very nicely put, Rosh. I am just a couple of hours old in the bloggers world and still trying to set up etc…this was the first article I chose to read šŸ™‚ and I must say there was an instant connect! really liked your style and the new word you coined – Midovert…fantastic!

    • Thank you, so much! šŸ™‚ I don’t know what to say! I’m honoured!!! šŸ™‚ That’s exactly how I feel! I’m glad you could connect…I love blogging because it’s an amazing way of finding complete strangers who seem to connect to you so much more than you would expect them to! And…I guess I just found a new blog-pal! Welcome to the blogosphere. Hope you enjoy it. And I’d be glad if I can be of any help! šŸ™‚

  3. introverts are not necessarily selfish. their inner world too exciting and intriguing for them, compared to the outer world. their thoughts again could be selfless, for the society. so, mapping introvert to selfishness is frivolous.

    • I think you misunderstood what I had written. All I meant is that the expression of introverts being more interested in themselves makes them sound kinda self-centered. I meant to say that it just ‘sounds’ like they are selfish, I personally do NOT think so. It was just a crazy observation! I agree with what you said. Loved your line about their (introverts’) inner worlds being too exciting for them, compared to the outer world! šŸ™‚

  4. Introvert I think, I like social contact but open up more when its one to one compared to being in a group. But definitely interested in others, individuals, cultures, language, more so than in myself, so hard to define really.

    • It’s always sort of ‘fun’ discovering which group you actually belong to. Glad to know you’re a happy introvert (especially since you’re one who is interested in other individuals, inspite of it)! šŸ™‚

  5. I am shocked and amazed that you found my blog with that story too! It has also made me decide, I should keep blogging. Thanks for pulling me out of the depths of blogging with your post šŸ™‚

I really like ambivert as well. I think, as with most things in life, two categories is never enough and neither is three. Life should be seen as much more of a spectrum that people find themselves lining up on as opposed to bipolar opposites that people feel they must box themselves into.

    • I was surprised when I read your post, because I had never expected to find anyone else with the same thought, let alone the same word! šŸ™‚ And what you said is true, two or three categories, in any aspect, is never enough to describe all the different people we come across.
Do keep blogging. Glad I was a source of motivation for you. Even I had stopped blogging for a long time. I got back to it after almost 1 and half years. But since I resumed, I haven’t had second thoughts! I’m in love with it. In fact, I’m addicted. So, I suggest you continue blogging, too. Have fun!

  6. Midovert, ambivert, whatever you call it, I suppose I’m one, just like you – although I’m not sure I want to be pigeon-holed as one thing or another! I have my moments of self-reflection, keeping to myself and my thoughts, while (more often than not) I am interested in the thoughts of others. I may seem introverted in large gatherings, but I am really listening to the conversations and what other people are expressing, not always quick to jump in with my opinions unless something strikes a chord with me.

It’s fun finding other people who think as you do. I am so glad I jumped into the blogging world a few months ago because I have ‘met’ so many like-minded folks out there in cyberspace. It’s been a blast! šŸ™‚

    • I feel the same way, too! Sometimes, amidst a lot of people, I like to keep to myself and silently observe others around me. But some other times, I feel an urge to just get into the crowd and talk and make friends. šŸ™‚
And I’m really glad I came back to blogging and stayed… šŸ™‚ It’s great getting to know so many others who think like you…and the best part – you get to talk your heart out! šŸ™‚

  7. Reblogged this on 1wordbeautiful and commented:
Interesting post! I would consider myself a midovert. I think most people fall under midovert because life calls us to play the part of both introvert and extrovert. Also, aspeople mature they sometimes change from intro to extrovert and vice versa so a thats why i think many ppl have features of both.

    • I agree! Though I have met a lot of people who fit into the midovert category, they tend to be more comfortable with one specific category most of the time. And yes, it’s so true that we change over the years! šŸ™‚

    • Actually, that’s the right word, I guess. I found it after publishing the post. Anyway, I still stick to midovert! šŸ™‚

  9. I really like you writing style.. it’s just like seeing you talking in front and that too without breathing. šŸ™‚ .. I’m not sure about “Intro”, “extro”, “ambi” or “mido” but I’m sure you must be very talkative at times.. and yes thank you for the new word “Mido” lol

    • Yes, I’m talkative, but can go quiet when I’m not in the mood or when I’m not among my kinda people (elders, serious people, you get the idea!)… And you know what? When I write, I write it like I’m talking to someone. šŸ™‚ So, you got it right again! Glad you liked it. Thank you so much!

  10. Nice post Roshni. Anne has already said what exactly i had in my mind. About the continuum and ambiverts. Good read. My blog is missing you by the way. Just took some time to look at my blog and went through your comments and reactions. Felt they are so genuine. So, from your heart.

    • Wow! I’m glad you understood the sincerity of my comments…! šŸ™‚ I truly enjoyed your posts. I’ve missed reading them; it’s been quite a while, I know. Thank you for coming back to mine. I’m already on my way to check out what you have been posting lately.
